Overheard Comment

I just heard a couple of mothers chatting at baseball, and one of them said to her son, "Go have fun!" She turned to the other mother and said, "That's the whole point of life, isn't it?" The whole point? Seems like a rather awful existence, actually. What meaning is there in "fun"? Other than itself? I'm not saying we shouldn't have fun, but I definitely don't think it's the POINT of life. I think that's a very self-centered viewpoint. Bli neder, I'll blog more about what I believe the point IS, but a traditional Jew would definitely not say it's to have fun. Neither would any traditionally religious person, I expect.
